2007-NOW - University of Applied Science HES-SO FRIBOURG - Full Professor
I am now affiliated with the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of the University of Applied Science Western Switzerland in Fribourg. I am in charge of teaching at the bachelor and master level, as well as direction of bachelor, master and doctorate thesis. Regarding research, I am managing several projects in the area of applied machine learning, green-it and it-for-green.
2007-2011 - University of Applied Science HES-SO Wallis - Full Professor
I was affiliated with the Institute of Business Information Systems of the University of Applied Science Western Switzerland, in charge of teaching and Ra&D activities in the Software Engineering Unit. From 2009, I was leading the Software Engineering Unit that was including 5 profs and 6 assistants.
2004-now - University of Fribourg - Lecturer and senior researcher
I am also affiliated with the computer science department of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland where I am in charge of teaching and research activities within the DIVA group . On the teaching side, I am giving two computer science classes and supervising multiple bachelor, master and PhD student projects. On the research side, I am active in the areas of statistical modelling applied to speech recognition, speaker verification, handwriting recognition, signature modelling and image identification. I was full time from 2004 to 2007 and now 20% from 2007 until now.
2004-2007- Independent IT Consultant (part-time)
I took part to different software development projects as an independent IT consultant. The companies I have been working for include UbiCall Communications SA (Belgium), Antexis gmbh (Switzerland) and Vocvox (Belgium).
2000-2004 - UbiCall Communications - cofounder, director of technologies
I have held the position of Director of Technologies at UbiCall Communications SA where I was in charge of architecture and development of the products. UbiCall is a company offering advanced voice-activated telephony services for telecommunication carriers and corporations. The leading product of UbiCall is Voxplorer Receptionist, an automated attendant for directory dialing in enterprise. As cofounder and member of the board of administrator of UbiCall Communications, I had the opportunity to develop experience in company management, team building, fund raising and project leadership.
1998-2000 - UBS, Zurich, Switzerland - IT System Architect
I have held the position of IT System Architect with UBS, largest bank of Switzerland. I was in charge of prototyping and field-testing the next-generation IT systems for the bank, such as voice-activated phonebanking and biometric systems. I managed the development of several voice-activated banking services in English, French and German, conducted multiple field tests for the bank and I was in charge of representing UBS for the European PICASSO project on speaker verification in telephony environment.
1995-1998 - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne - Ph.D. candidate
In 95, I started a Ph.D. thesis at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in the field of Speech Technologies and Artificial Neural Networks. I published most of my work done in the framework of the thesis including 12 international conference publications, 2 journal publications and a book chapter in Speech Technologies. I also took part to the 1997 NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) competition on Speaker Recognition where the algorithms we developed in the lab were classified amongst the best.
1996-1997 - International Computer Science Institute, Berkeley CA - Visiting Researcher
In the framework of my Ph.D. degree, I had the opportunity to hold for six months a position of visiting researcher in the International Computer Science Institute of Berkeley, California and to reinforce my knowledge through the large experience of this laboratory in the field of Speech Technologies and Artificial Neural Networks.
1993-1995 - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne - Researcher
I started working in Speech Research since October 93 with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne. I took part in several European research projects where I studied advanced Speech Recognition algorithms in team with Lernhout & Hauspie (now Nuance), Ascom and major university laboratories.
